Barely has the ICC Champions Trophy begun, that the fickle numbers on the Championship table are dancing already. Within 24 hours of India climbing to second place on the ICC ODI rankings, the positions have been shuffled around yet again, with India getting to be back on top. India has not played a match yet at the current Champions Trophy, so their move up is by default again, thanks to hosts South Africa's disappointing loss to Sri Lanka in their series opener Tuesday. South Africa lost by 55 runs (decided by Duckworth-Lewis method) when the match was stopped by rain, and fell to 3rd place on the rankings. Australia moved up one spot to take second place and at 125 points, is only one point behind India.
This is the second time this month that India is enjoying numero uno status, the first being when they won their first match against New Zealand, at the Compaq Cup Tri Series held in Sri Lanka (Sept 8 -14). Although, they stayed at the top for barely 24 hours at the time too. With Australia so close on India's heels now, no doubt there's going to be some more fancy foot-work from those numbers over the next couple of weeks.
